The Martha’s Vineyard Adult Learning Program English as a Second Language classes are funded by the Massachusetts Department of Education for 100 seats; which means that there are always a limited number of students we can enroll into our program.
In an effort to accommodate as many students as possible (often more than the allotted 100), those who are not selected into the initial class enrollment in September are automatically put on our detailed and very fluid WAITLIST.
Once on our WAITLIST students will be informed of the class level for which they are waitlisted, our WAITLIST policies, and what to expect. When a space does become available in that class our advisor will contact you via text or phone and offer you the open seat.
If you are not available to join or DO NOT respond to our inquiry within 24 hours, we will contact someone else. You will, however, remain on the WAITLIST unless you specifically ask to be removed, thereby giving you another chance to join at a future, more convenient time.
Additionally, please note that the MVALP advisor or director will contact WAITLISTED students via text or phone at least once per semester (normally December and March) to verify that they are still interested in our services. If you do not respond after two contacts (1 full academic year) we will remove you from the WAITLIST altogether.
The MVALP WAITLIST is by no means a dead end. Enrolled students move off island, change jobs, and experience changing life conditions, so we are continuously adding and adjusting our class rosters.
Therefore, if you are placed on our WAITLIST, we encourage you to be prepared to join an ongoing class on short notice, or, at least, to respond and communicate your continued interest in the program. Even if you are unable to join a class during the year you are on the WAITLIST, you will automatically be prioritized for registration and enrollment during next year’s ESOL program.
