In-Person ESOL Instructor for Out of School Youth
Martha’s Vineyard Adult Learning Program
Salary: 50$ per hour
(instructional hours + prep hours for 20-24 weeks (October-March)
General Statement of Duties:
The ESOL instructor prepares lessons and provides group English instruction to young learners (age 16-21) to help prepare them for HISET or college certification. Classes hours are flexible but ideally 2-3 evenings a week (7:00pm -9:30 pm. The teacher will teach the class, monitor student progress, maintain required program records, and attend program meetings and events.
Responsibilities:
- Read the Adult ESOL Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, stay current in research on adult learners, and familiarize yourself to the needs and interests of adult students.
- Read the MVALP Curriculum Guide and the sample MVALP lesson plan folders.
- Conduct a Needs & Goals Analysis during the first week of your class.
- Use the level-appropriate MVALP lesson cache, or the MVALP lesson plan template to write student-centered lesson plans. Keep them in an organized folder and hand them in monthly during staff meetings.
- Prepare and teach units designed to develop English language skills in the context of practical life situations, and in response to students’ specific needs, goals, and the DOE benchmarks.
- Organize learning activities that enable students to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become more active community members.
- Provide opportunities for speaking, listening, reading, and writing practice.
- Provide classroom activities that address the learning styles of all students; whole class instruction, group and pair work, individual attention, tactile, visual, auditory, etc.
- Foster a comfortable and respectful classroom environment that will provide the support and encouragement to build student confidence.
- Work with students to identify strengths and weaknesses, set realistic learning and community goals, and regularly assess their progress in reaching these goals.
- Document student progress through quizzes, student self-assessments, writing assignments, and worksheets. Keep a portfolio of work for each student.
- Assist in initial pre-program student assessment and registration.
- Assist the advisor in student goal setting and achievement.
- Document your own professional development.
- New staff to attend teacher orientation provided by SABES (paid).
- Other duties assigned by the Director as needed.
Qualifications:
- ESOL Teaching and curriculum development experience
- Experience working with young learners and diverse populations
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Master’s Degree preferred.

2023-2024 ESOL Teacher (Live Learning)
September 2023-March 2024
T/W/TH 7:00-9:30 Teaching to Adults
General Statement of duties:
The Martha’s Vineyard Adult Learning Program is seeking an ESOL instructor for the 2023-2024 Academic year (September-March). The instructor will prepare lessons and provide group instruction to adult learners during a 6-month semester. Classes will be both live and remote via zoom with complementary asynchronous materials. Syllabus is in place.
Responsibilities:
- Teach 3 nights a week for 6-month semester (2.5hrs X 3 days = 7.5 hours per week)
- Paid Prep time 5 hours per week
- Attend all staff meetings and program PD activities (Monthly)
- Assist with student assessments (Pre and Post program)
- Assist student goal setting and achievement
- Read and understand MVALP handbook, Curriculum guide and all MVALP policies
- Use MVALP lesson plans and MVALP online content developed for your class or
- Use MVALP lesson plan template and write a student-centered lesson plan for each class

Martha’s Vineyard Adult Learning Program 2023-2024 Translator
General Statement of Duties:
The Martha’s Vineyard Adult Learning Program (MVALP) is seeking a part time Portuguese/English
translator to join our growing ESOL program. The MVALP translator will provide live and/or written
translation for Director, Student Advisor, Office staff and teachers.
Hours:
Flexible hours but while classes are in session (September-April) there will occasionally be evening hours (6-9 pm).
5-10 hours per week depending on skillset.
Contract runs August 15–April 15, 2022 but can be extended to full year.
Salary 43$/hr

Martha’s Vineyard Adult Learning Program
Fall Opening for part time ESOL Teacher/Head Teacher
The Martha’s Vineyard Adult Learning Program is seeking a Head ESOL Teacher to lead, inspire, and
manage our 4 to 6-member ESOL teaching staff. The candidate will also be expected to teach at least 1
ESOL class during the 2023-2024 Academic year (September-March).
Qualifications:
- An understanding of how languages are taught and learned
- Online teaching and curriculum development experience
- Experience working with adult learners and diverse populations
- Excellent oral, and written communication skills
- Ability to use to technology for online class delivery options
Head Teacher Responsibilities (7-15 hours per week during program (Sept 12. 2023-April 15, 2024)
(Possible yearlong extension)
- Understand existing MVALP curriculum
- Develop new lesson plans and new courses as needed
- Serve as reference point for MVALP teacher problems, questions, and teaching strategies
- Assist Director in setting and implementing the program educational goals
Teaching Responsibilities (Approximately 10 hours per week):
- Teach 3 nights a week for 6-month semester (7.5 hours per week)
- Attend all staff meetings and program PD activities (2-3 hours monthly)
- Paid prep time (5 hours per week)
- Assist with Pre and Post program activities (9-15 hours per year)
- Work with Program advisor to assist student goal setting and achievement
- Read and understand MVALP handbook, Curriculum guide and all MVALP policies
- Use MVALP lesson plans and MVALP online content developed for your class or
- Use MVALP lesson plan template and write a student-centered lesson plan for each class
Salary $50/hr
