In-Person ESOL Instructor for Out of School Youth
Martha’s Vineyard Adult Learning Program
Salary: 50$ per hour
(instructional hours + prep hours for 20-24 weeks (October-March)
General Statement of Duties:
The ESOL instructor prepares lessons and provides group English instruction to young learners (age 16-21) to help prepare them for HISET or college certification. Classes hours are flexible but ideally 2-3 evenings a week (7:00pm -9:30 pm. The teacher will teach the class, monitor student progress, maintain required program records, and attend program meetings and events.
Responsibilities:
- Read the Adult ESOL Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, stay current in research on adult learners, and familiarize yourself to the needs and interests of adult students.
- Read the MVALP Curriculum Guide and the sample MVALP lesson plan folders.
- Conduct a Needs & Goals Analysis during the first week of your class.
- Use the level-appropriate MVALP lesson cache, or the MVALP lesson plan template to write student-centered lesson plans. Keep them in an organized folder and hand them in monthly during staff meetings.
- Prepare and teach units designed to develop English language skills in the context of practical life situations, and in response to students’ specific needs, goals, and the DOE benchmarks.
- Organize learning activities that enable students to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become more active community members.
- Provide opportunities for speaking, listening, reading, and writing practice.
- Provide classroom activities that address the learning styles of all students; whole class instruction, group and pair work, individual attention, tactile, visual, auditory, etc.
- Foster a comfortable and respectful classroom environment that will provide the support and encouragement to build student confidence.
- Work with students to identify strengths and weaknesses, set realistic learning and community goals, and regularly assess their progress in reaching these goals.
- Document student progress through quizzes, student self-assessments, writing assignments, and worksheets. Keep a portfolio of work for each student.
- Assist in initial pre-program student assessment and registration.
- Assist the advisor in student goal setting and achievement.
- Document your own professional development.
- New staff to attend teacher orientation provided by SABES (paid).
- Other duties assigned by the Director as needed.
Qualifications:
- ESOL Teaching and curriculum development experience
- Experience working with young learners and diverse populations
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Master’s Degree preferred.
